The Impact of Your Diet on the Planet
According to a new study of greenhouse gas emission from U.S. food, it’s not the transportation of food that’s a killer, it’s how the food is produced. Eating less red meat and dairy ends up being a more effective way to lower your climate footprint than eating local food, according to the study. Of course, doing both is probably a good idea, but it’s an interesting article.
For example, and putting the data into context, the authors say eating a totally local diet is equivalent to driving around 1000 miles less per year, but going vegetarian one day a week would be like driving 1160 miles less per year, which means those holier-than-thou vegetarian friends of yours who are always yapping about their pristine lifestyle are indeed holier-than-thou and pristine. At least as it pertains to saving the planet, which you might not care about, which is awfully rude of you seeing as how the Earth never did anything bad to you, unless you count all those wicked face plants you took off the skateboard as a kid, but this is kinda like blaming the messenger. Gravity happens, and the Earth felt bad about that.
But the study. Guess the lesson here is eat less red meat, which you probably already knew, but now you know another reason why. Speaking for myself I’ve always thought the strongest argument against eating meat is the fact that you’re consuming a wretched existence. This is the karmic argument, or you are what you eat, metaphorically.
Update: Because it’s related - fuck the chicken, just grow the meat straight from an embryo.
