Lying Politicos
The following thoughts come with the usual reminder, I don’t know all the facts, I’m no expert, and take with heaping portion of salt. The Seattle Times (via Political Wire) reports that an Appeals Court struck down a state law prohibiting political candidates from lying about their opponents. According to the decision the law is unconstitutional.
And maybe it is, I don’t know but what I do know is politicians will not moderate themselves. They’ll lie every time if they think it’ll get them the win. I’m an optimistic sort, full of hope, but the way the system is rigged now, politicians lie. They lie a lot and they lie often. We probably have too many laws regulating morality as it is and they often do more harm than good, but I don’t think there’s any doubt that our political system and those who inhabit it are lacking some serious integrity and humility. Seems to me if people can’t internalize a kindergarten lesson then maybe a law might be a good idea. In any event, eventually the system will buckle under the weight unless it’s addressed in an honest and transparent way. Just don’t hold your breath waiting for the politicians to change it, way to much invested in how the games played.
