Every 38 Seconds.
A pot-smoker is arrested every 38 seconds in America and the total arrests for 2006 exceeded the number of arrests for all violent crimes combined, including murder, manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Now this is according to NORML, so there’s that, but the stats are pretty much besides the point anyway. Pot should be legal. It’s no more a gateway drug than cigarettes and booze. If you want to throw down the health issues, fine, but it comes down to this, cigarettes, alcohol, and weed are all “bad” for you, as is plastic, high fructose corn syrup, cow meat pumped with absurdity, automobiles that get 25 miles per gallon of fuel, and working sixty hours a week with only two weeks of vacation a year. The illegality of pot has never had anything to do with keeping people healthy, or its suggested “corrosive” behavioral effects. It’s simply a case of there not being a big enough pot industry, and respective lobby. This situation exists for a variety of historical reasons. Mainly it never had the chance, but if it did, pot would be legal today.
